If rebase --quit cannot remove the state directory then it dies. However
when rebase finishes normally or the user runs rebase --abort any errors
that occur when removing the state directory are ignored. That is fixed
by this commit.
All of the callers of finish_rebase() except the code
that handles --abort are careful to make sure they get a postive return
value, do the same for --abort.

rebase -i: run without forking rebase--interactive
When the builtin rebase starts an interactive rebase it parses the
options and then repackages them and forks
`rebase--interactive`. Separate the option parsing in
cmd_rebase__interactive() from the business logic to allow interactive
rebases can be run without forking `rebase__interactive` by calling
run_rebase_interactive() directly.
Starting interactive rebases without forking makes it easy to debug
the sequencer without worrying about attaching to child
processes. Ævar has also reported that some of the rebase perf tests
are 30% faster [1].
This patch also makes it easy to remove cmd_rebase__interactive() in
the future when git-legacy-rebase.sh and
git-rebase--preserve-merges.sh are retired.
cmd_rebase() and cmd_rebase__interactive() used different enums to hold
the current action. Change to using a common enum so the values are the
same when we change `rebase -i` to avoid forking `rebase--interactive`.

This is in preparation for using `struct rebase_options` when parsing
options in cmd_rebase__interactive(). Using a string for onto,
restrict_revision and upstream, was a hangover from the scripted version
of rebase. The functions that use these variables are updated to take a
`struct commit`.

As we have a macro for this it makes sense to use it. Having
cmd_rebase() and cmd_rebase__interactive() use the same values for

As the checkout runs in a separate process our index will be out of date
so it should be discarded. The existing callers are not doing this
consistently so do it here to avoid the callers having to worry about
it.
This fixes some test failures that happen if do_interactive_rebase() is
called without forking rebase--interactive which we will implement
shortly. Running
git rebase -i master topic
starting on master created empty todo lists because all the commits in
topic were marked as cherry-picks. After topic was checked out in
prepare_branch_to_be_rebased() the working tree contained the contents
from topic but the index contained master and the cache entries were
still valid. This meant that diff_populate_filespec() which loads the
blobs when calculating patch-id's ended up reading the contents for
master from the working tree which actually contained topic.

The Makefile uses 'find' utility to enumerate all the *.h header
files, which is expensive on platforms with slow filesystems; it
now optionally uses "ls-files" if working within a repository,
which is a trick similar to how all sources are enumerated to run
ETAGS on.

The set of header files used by "make hdr-check" unconditionally
included sha256/gcrypt.h, even when it is not used, causing the

Recently the Git for Windows project started the upgrade process to
a MSYS2 runtime version based on Cygwin v3.x.
This has the very notable consequence that `$(uname -r)` no longer
reports a version starting with "2", but a version with "3".
That breaks our build, as df5218b4c30b (config.mak.uname: support MSys2,
2016-01-13) simply did not expect the version reported by `uname -r` to
depend on the underlying Cygwin version: it expected the reported
version to match the "2" in "MSYS2".
So let's invert that test case to test for *anything else* than a
version starting with "1" (for MSys). That should safeguard us for the
future, even if Cygwin ends up releasing versionsl like 314.272.65536.

This moves the writing of the comment "Rebase $shortrevisions onto
$shortonto ($command_count commands)" from todo_list_write_to_file() to
append_todo_help().
shortrevisions, shortonto, and command_count are passed as parameters to
append_todo_help().
During the initial edit of the todo list, shortrevisions and shortonto
are not NULL. Therefore, if shortrevisions or shortonto is NULL, then
edit_todo would be true, otherwise it would be false. Thus, edit_todo
is removed from the parameters of append_todo_help().

rebase-interactive: use todo_list_write_to_file() in edit_todo_list()
Just like complete_action(), edit_todo_list() used a
function (transform_todo_file()) that read the todo list from the disk
and wrote it back, resulting in useless disk accesses.
This changes edit_todo_list() to call directly todo_list_write_to_file()
instead.

sequencer: refactor skip_unnecessary_picks() to work on a todo_list
This refactors skip_unnecessary_picks() to work on a todo_list. As this
function is only called by complete_action() (and thus is not used by
rebase -p), the file-handling logic is completely dropped here.
Instead of truncating the todo list’s buffer, the items are moved to
the beginning of the list, eliminating the need to reparse the list.
This also means its buffer cannot be directly written to the disk.
rewrite_file() is then removed, as it is now unused.

sequencer: change complete_action() to use the refactored functions
complete_action() used functions that read the todo-list file, made some
changes to it, and wrote it back to the disk.
The previous commits were dedicated to separate the part that deals with
the file from the actual logic of these functions. Now that this is
done, we can call directly the "logic" functions to avoid useless file
access.
The parsing of the list has to be done by the caller. If the buffer of
the todo list provided by the caller is empty, a `noop' command is
directly added to the todo list, without touching the buffer.

sequencer: refactor rearrange_squash() to work on a todo_list
This refactors rearrange_squash() to work on a todo_list to avoid
redundant reads and writes. The function is renamed
todo_list_rearrange_squash().
The old version created a new buffer, which was directly written to the
disk. This new version creates a new item list by just copying items
from the old item list, without creating a new buffer. This eliminates
the need to reparse the todo list, but this also means its buffer cannot
be directly written to the disk.
As rebase -p still need to check the todo list from the disk, a new
function is introduced, rearrange_squash_in_todo_file().
complete_action() still uses rearrange_squash_in_todo_file() for now.
This will be changed in a future commit.

sequencer: refactor sequencer_add_exec_commands() to work on a todo_list
This refactors sequencer_add_exec_commands() to work on a todo_list to
avoid redundant reads and writes to the disk.
Instead of inserting the `exec' commands between the other commands and
re-parsing the buffer at the end, they are appended to the buffer once,
and a new list of items is created. Items from the old list are copied
across and new `exec' items are appended when necessary. This
eliminates the need to reparse the buffer, but this also means we have
to use todo_list_write_to_disk() to write the file.
todo_list_add_exec_commands() and sequencer_add_exec_commands() are
modified to take a string list instead of a string -- one item for each
command. This makes it easier to insert a new command to the todo list
for each command to execute.
sequencer_add_exec_commands() still reads the todo list from the disk,
as it is needed by rebase -p.
complete_action() still uses sequencer_add_exec_commands() for now.
This will be changed in a future commit.

Our compat/bswap.h lacks the usual preprocessor guards against multiple
inclusion. This usually isn't an issue since it only gets included from
git-compat-util.h, which has its own guards. But it would produce
redeclaration errors if any file included it separately.
Our hdr-check target would complain about this, except that it currently
skips items in compat/ entirely.

Makefile: fix 'hdr-check' when GCRYPT not installed
If the GCRYPT_SHA256 build variable is not set, then the 'hdr-check'
target complains about the missing <gcrypt.h> header file. Add the
'sha256/gcrypt.h' header file to the exception list, if the build
variable is not defined. While here, replace the 'xdiff%' filter
pattern with 'xdiff/%' (and similarly for the compat pattern) since
the original pattern inadvertently excluded the 'xdiff-interface.h'
header.

Makefile: use `git ls-files` to list header files, if possible
In d85b0dff72 (Makefile: use `find` to determine static header
dependencies, 2014-08-25), we switched from a static list of header
files to a dynamically-generated one, asking `find` to enumerate them.
Back in those days, we did not use `$(LIB_H)` by default, and many a
`make` implementation seems smart enough not to run that `find` command
in that case, so it was deemed okay to run `find` for special targets
requiring this macro.
However, as of ebb7baf02f (Makefile: add a hdr-check target,
2018-09-19), $(LIB_H) is part of a global rule and therefore must be
expanded. Meaning: this `find` command has to be run upon every
`make` invocation. In the presence of many a worktree, this can tax the
developers' patience quite a bit.
Even in the absence of worktrees or other untracked files and
directories, the cost of I/O to generate that list of header files is
simply a lot larger than a simple `git ls-files` call.
Therefore, just like in 335339758c (Makefile: ask "ls-files" to list
source files if available, 2011-10-18), we now prefer to use `git
ls-files` to enumerate the header files to enumerating them via `find`,
falling back to the latter if the former failed (which would be the case
e.g. in a worktree that was extracted from a source .tar file rather
than from a clone of Git's sources).
This has one notable consequence: we no longer include `command-list.h`
in `LIB_H`, as it is a generated file, not a tracked one, but that is
easily worked around. Of the three sites that use `LIB_H`, two
(`LOCALIZED_C` and `CHK_HDRS`) already handle generated headers
separately. In the third, the computed-dependency fallback, we can just
add in a reference to $(GENERATED_H).
Likewise, we no longer include not-yet-tracked header files in `LIB_H`.
Given the speed improvements, these consequences seem a comparably small
price to pay.

When transmitting and receiving POSTs for protocol v0 and v1,
remote-curl uses post_rpc() (and associated functions), but when doing
the same for protocol v2, it uses a separate set of functions
(proxy_rpc() and others). Besides duplication of code, this has caused
at least one bug: the auth retry mechanism that was implemented in v0/v1
was not implemented in v2.
To fix this issue and avoid it in the future, make remote-curl also use
post_rpc() when handling protocol v2. Because line lengths are written
to the HTTP request in protocol v2 (unlike in protocol v0/v1), this
necessitates changes in post_rpc() and some of the functions it uses;
perform these changes too.
A test has been included to ensure that the code for both the unchunked
and chunked variants of the HTTP request is exercised.
Note: stateless_connect() has been updated to use the lower-level packet
reading functions instead of struct packet_reader. The low-level control
is necessary here because we cannot change the destination buffer of
struct packet_reader while it is being used; struct packet_buffer has a
peeking mechanism which relies on the destination buffer being present
in between a peek and a read.

travis: remove the hack to build the Windows job on Azure Pipelines
Since Travis did not support Windows (and now only supports very limited
Windows jobs, too limited for our use, the test suite would time out
*all* the time), we added a hack where a Travis job would trigger an
Azure Pipeline (which back then was still called VSTS Build), wait for
it to finish (or time out), and download the log (if available).
Needless to say that it was a horrible hack, necessitated by a bad
situation.
Nowadays, however, we have Azure Pipelines support, and do not need that
hack anymore. So let's retire it.

On NetBSD, the version of msgfmt is still 0.14.4. There's no hope for
an upgrade due to some GPLv3 allergy of NetBSD's. This version chokes
on heavily decorated commented entries in po files. It's safer to get
rid of all these obsolete entries.
When "--no-index" is in effect (or implied by the arguments), git-diff
jumps early to a special code path to perform that diff. This means we
miss out on some settings like enabling --ext-diff and --textconv by
default.
Let's jump to the no-index path _after_ we've done more setup on
rev.diffopt. Since some of the options don't affect us (e.g., items
related to the index), let's re-order the setup into two blocks (see the
in-code comments).
Note that we also need to stop re-initializing the diffopt struct in
diff_no_index(). This should not be necessary, as it will already have
been initialized by cmd_diff() (and there are no other callers). That in
turn lets us drop the "repository" argument from diff_no_index (which
never made much sense, since the whole point is that you don't need a
repository).

During the six months of development of the Azure Pipelines support, the
patches went through quite a few iterations of changes, and to test
those iterations, a temporary build definition was used.
In the meantime, Azure Pipelines support made it to `master`, and we now
have a regular Azure Pipeline, installed via the common GitHub App
workflow. This new pipeline has a different name (git.git instead of
test-git.git), and a new ID (11 instead of 2).
Let's adjust the badge in our README to reflect that final shape of the
Azure Pipeline.

Add trace2_region_enter() and trace2_region_leave() calls around the
various phases of a status scan. This gives elapsed time for each
phase in the GIT_TR2_PERF and GIT_TR2_EVENT trace target.
Also, these Trace2 calls now use s->repo rather than the_repository.
